Is India really Independent?

15th August 1947 was the day on which India got independence from the British Rule. It is a red-letter day marked in history when India got freed from all the cruelty and burden imposed upon her by the Britishers. Since then, India as a country has grown manifold, but the real question is, ‘Is India really free?’

Everyday scenarios force us to think about what we have actually achieved and why did our freedom fighters sacrifice their lives? We face a multitude of societal obstacles.

Even though we live in the 21st century, our country’s mindset is still stuck in the 19th century. A large segment of our population is still unemployed, either due to lack of jobs or lack of education and skills, which in itself is a critical problem. Our education system is crippling because of the deficiency of proper educational institutions. Our society still doesn’t treat everyone equally, but rather discriminate on the basis of caste, creed and gender. Lack of availability of clean drinking water and scarcity of food are some of the causes for many deaths in the country. In some parts of the nation, people are still fighting on the grounds of religion and religious practices, which leads to communal disharmony, and in some cases, communal riots. Also, corruption, the tool used by many individuals to get their work done in various government and non-government organisations are some of the few roadblocks in India’s journey ahead to be successful.

Is this the ‘India’ our freedom fighters fought and sacrificed their lives for?The situation is really depressing and we, as citizens of this country, should take some action to overcome these challenges. We need to make sure that our country is safe and secure. The day we are free from all these social cohorts, would be the day our nation becomes a truly independent one.
