What exactly is destiny? In simple terms, it is the pre-determined future. It is something which is inexplicable. But one can’t emasculate the existence of hard work and its influence on our lives. The question is, how much responsibility should we accept for how our lives turn out?

I strongly believe that we can shape our destiny with hard work and perseverance, but we can’t rule out the possibility of destiny having an unknown influence on the direction our life takes, irrespective of all the efforts we put in. So, when we don’t get the expected outcome, we explore other options and take advantage of opportunities that present themselves. We work sincerely towards our goal and finally when we succeed, we feel that perhaps, this is what destiny wanted for us. But again, there are always certain factors in life that are not under our control, but that does not mean that we use destiny as a convenient scapegoat for all the fiascos in life. At times, we do end up blaming destiny for whatever happens in order to avoid the burden of taking responsibility for our actions. Having a “Que Sera Sera” attitude towards life, that is, what will be, will be, does not mean that we stop putting in efforts towards what we want to achieve. The least we can do is accept responsibility for the factors which are under our control.

I came across a quote by William Shakespeare, where he says, “It is not in the stars to hold our destiny, but in ourselves” and I realised that we, always have opportunities in life and it is up to us to determine how to use them. The direction in which our life goes depends upon both destiny and hard-work. What matters is our attitude towards both these factors. Blindly believing that what is meant to happen will happen, is not the outlook we should have. What’s important is to strike a balance by working diligently and leaving the rest up to destiny.
