The Doctoral Programme of the institute prepares the students for careers in teaching and research. The academic programme leading to the Ph.D degree is broad-based and involves a minimum course credit requirement and research thesis. The institute also encourages research in interdisciplinary areas facilitated by a system of joint supervision and interdisciplinary exposure and training. The broad objective of the Ph.D programme is not only to keep pace with expanding frontiers of knowledge but also to provide research training relevant to the present social and economic objectives of the country.
The Ph.D program of IMT Nagpur is a collaborative program with National Law University (NLU), Jodhpur. The rules and regulations and the modus operandi of the program are set by NLU and the degree will be awarded by NLU. IMT Nagpur is a center recognized under joint MOU to run this program. The program is a part-time program and extends for 4 semesters of six months each.
Those who are qualified with MBA or equivalent or related post graduate degree from recognized universities are eligible to apply. Top five percent of the candidates applied for the program are selected through a rigorous multilevel selection process consisting of application blank, written test and personal interview. Selected candidates are required to undergo course work on research methodology and courses related to their area of research interest. Throughout the Ph.D process the students are guided and monitored by a doctoral committee consisting of eminent researchers including the research supervisor. At every stage of the Ph.D process the students get constructive feedback by sharing the theme and the methodology of their scholarly enquiry with interdisciplinary peers.
After registering for PhD the candidates will undergo course work for first six months and submit a synopsis of his/her proposed PhD topic. The Doctoral committee will evaluate the synopsis and provide feedback. On successful completion of course work and synopsis, the candidate will continue his/her work for next three semesters and submit the final synopsis before doctoral committee for approval. On successful clearance from doctoral committee, the candidate will submit the thesis which will be evaluated by two external examiners and followed by public viva-voce. The Ph.D degree will be awarded by NLU.
