IMT Nagpur First Convocation held on 7th April 2006

The first convocation of IMT Nagpur was held at IMT premises at Ghaziabad. It marked the beginning of a glorious flight for the fledgling which has acquired strong wings and ready to soar high in the blue sky of industrial transformation in India. In all 63 out of 85 of the graduating students received heir degrees in person from the Chairman of the institute, Shri Kamal Nath. Mr. Ratan Tata, Chairman of Tata Sons and a doyen of Indian industry was the chief guest.

Enthusiasm filled the scene completely. Even the scorching sun did not dampen the spirits and the sense of achievement of our student managers. The ceremony started with the traditional lighting of the lamp and saraswati vandana. It was followed by the Director’s report. Our director, Dr. Anwar Ali, submitted the Director’s report. In his report he traced the heights the institute has achieved in the short run and highlighted the future plans. He also recalled the great support extended by the top management, especially the Chairman and the vice-chairman towards IMT Nagpur. IMT Nagpur also places on record the support and cooperation extended by the Burdwan University, especially the Vice-Chancellor Dr. Malik and the Registrar, Dr. Dan graced the occasion as the representative of the Burdwan University.

In his annual report the Director, IMT Ghaziabad, Dr B S Sahay, highlighted the progress made by the institute in the last year which he called “a very exciting and productive one” in which IMT witnessed a brisk pace of overall growth and a renewed vigour in its pursuit of becoming a business school of international repute. He touched upon some of the steps taken to ensure the highest academic rigor and discipline. These include recruitment of highly qualified and well-known faculty, restructuring of the course curriculum, offering new and contemporary elective courses, introducing on-line learning and teaching, starting four centres of excellence, research and publications, modernizing IT infrastructure, upgrading state-of-the-art library, extending international linkages, executive development programmes, and alumni relations. He also gave a detailed report of IMT Ghaziabad in terms of faculty, students, research, executive training programmes. He informed the gathering of the first international campus of IMT coming up in Dubai and that IMT was the first Indian Business School to get licensure from the Ministry of Higher Education, Government of UAE. He informed that MBA, Executive MBA, and Executive MBA (Part-Time) programmes would be offered at the Dubai campus starting from the forthcoming academic session.

After the Directors’ report, the Chairman, delivered an awe inspiring speech, in which he highlighted the opportunities that existed in the new India and his own targets and goals he had set for the Indian industry. He asked the students to play an active part in making India a developed country by the year 2020.

This was followed by the speech of Mr. Ratan Tata. In his speech, he asked the student managers to dream big, do big and achieve big. Mr. Raman Sharma was awarded the gold medal and Mr. Vipul Mittal was awarded the Silver medal for their academic achievements, by the Chief Guest. This was followed by the moment each student was waiting for. Mr. Kamal Nath, Chairman of the institute, awarded the degrees to each student personally. This was really a proud moment for each one of the student.

With that, the convocation ceremony came to a close with the return of the convocation procession.
